A catalogue of the Library of Alexandria, as far as it can be rebuilt, 31 October 2026

The Shelves, read as a list

The catalogue as a list

Every work on our shelves in one table: 185 works, 88 of them in Callimachus's cupboards, the rest on the table of the city or the ledge, and 16 of them lost. Each row gives the class it stands in, its author and date, whether and how it survives, how sure we are that it was in Alexandria, where it lies on our shelves, how its placement is known, and how many of the show's doorways lead to it.

Callimachus's own placement is attested for only a few works; for the others the class is inferred or ours, and the table says which. Sort by any column, or narrow the list by class, by survival or by where a work lies. The same list prints as a clean catalogue with its date.

185 of 185 works.
